RedHook are completely new to me, they’re an Australian band who got together around 2017 and this is their second full length album, they claim to be screaming rap rock electro pop mutants, and well I was hardly not going to check that out was I?
The song that had the most impact on me was definitely “Jabberwockey”, it’s heavy but happy sounding, dance your way through the beautiful catchy high octane choruses and then bull the dirty breakdown face at the end, like a cross between old happy hardcore tunes with a modern twist spliced with some great metalcore.
Emmy Mack has a phenomenal voice, it really shines on album opener “Postcard Xo” which is an erruption of energy, upbeat tones with darker themes, I can only describe it as deeply infectious and it’s sank it’s hooks into me. They have more fellow Aussies in Sly Withers help them out on “Soju”, the accent was unexpected but I really like it, an anthem telling everyone fuck you, I feel that. “Low Budget Horror” is another amazing track which is so upbeat and evergetic, happily bouncing around in my car on repeat. “Inarticulate” is absolutely stunning, also starring more fellow Aussies The Faim, it’s a very gentle heartfelt song and I’m not ashamed to say it can provoke strong emotions in me, the vocals are absolutely perfect. This material is so varied with such a big range that there’s something for everyone, it’s definitely the most fun that I’ve had listening to an album from a band I don’t know in such a long time. I really hope I get to catch them on tour soon!
